She Oaks.
HISTORY
NAME
1857: She Oaks was originally part of Moranghurk and possibly Steiglitz. It was always said She Oaks was named after the many She Oak trees that grew in the area. It was also known as “The Oaks” and “The She Oaks” at different times.
1870: Meredith rate book records She Oaks as “She Oaks Rises”. This name possibly came from the early days when teams were coming up the old route through She Oaks and it was called “The Rises” (or small hills) with the She Oak trees on them.
1873: The Geelong Advertiser reported the bush fire at She Oaks. The area was then known as She Oaks.
PURPOSE
In the early days She-Oaks was part of Moranghurk and the area used for grazing sheep. After the discovery of gold at Steiglitz it was part of the route from Geelong to the Goldfields.
DIRECTIONS
One set of early directions as to how you could get to Steiglitz was “The shortest route from Geelong is to pass Colonel Kelsell’s Station, cross Sutherlands Creek and then follow the well defined dray road until you reach the shepherds hut, you are then within 2.5 miles from the diggings.”
Note:
1. Kelsell Station was at Sutherlands Creek in the area of the corner of Lumb’s Lane and Sharkey’s Road. Until recently
owned by Lawrie Forster and called Chesterdale.
2. The Shepherds Hut was at She Oaks in the area down near Jack Boardman’s, on the opposite side of the river from
Moranghurk’s shearing quarters.
Another similar route suggested crossing Sutherlands Creek at Darriwill and then following the high ground between the creek and the Moorabool River until you again reached the shepherds hut.
FAMILIES: 1800s & 1900s
FRASER, McLEOD, DUGGAN, KENNEALLY, CUNNINGTON, EAST, RICHARDS, BOURQUIN, MAROS, STRONG, STRATTON, BAILEY, GRUNDY, DUNGAR, FOSTER, NUTTAL, POLWORTH, GARGIN.
